| AUTHOR'S NOTES: | This is the first of a series of stories written addressing English and American relations after the Civil War. The Parkers are in my family background so I used some of what I know and added embellishments. The Parkers that came over to Texas in 1832 just before the Texas Revolution were from Illinois and were Baptists. A lot of Parkers did come from York England, but may or may not have been driven out due to religion. England did supply the south with war goods through blockade-runners. Luxury goods, iron and guns made a lot of ship owners rich during the war, and the port of Galveston was one of the few ports still in confederate hands when the war ended. John Wilkes Booth made the Latin declaration “Sic semper tyrannis!” when he fell to the stage after shooting President Lincoln. Lincoln’s death ended any chances for a civil end to the civil war according to many historians. President Johnson was reputed to be a drunk and is said to have spent the first night after taking the oath of office pacing the floor vowing vengeance against the south. The rest, as they say, is history. |
