Chapter 27 - Safe and Sound

Queen Mary of Spys

The mainland raiding party came on the scene half an hour later. As there was no jail in close vicinity of the inn, Sara Peterson had been carried back to the island with them and placed in the old fashion dungeon of Glenshire Hall under guard. At the manor house, they found a very messy front hall and five dead bodies lying in the floor. Robertson and Passpartout had gotten them all together but had not decided what to do with them.

Mrs. McKenzie and Andrew they found sitting up with Mary Kate in her room. She had stopped crying and was now calmer. Falling apart like that embarrassed her, but Andrew commended her despite it all for waiting till the crisis was over to do so.

Late the next day, Secret Service agents came to take custody of Peterson, as well as take reports from all who had been involved. Word of the spy queen's capture circulated very quickly. The assassins sent out for the Foggs gave up the chase, as there was no longer anyone to pay the bounty. The Foggs now were free to go.

A month later, due to the major national security concerns and the crimes involved; and her connections to powerful men in government, Sara Peterson’s trial was quick and kept quiet. She was charged with treason, spying, and attempts of murder on the Duchess, Earl and Robertson and suspicion of ordering the murder of both the Simon's. She was hung on the grounds of the tower.

May God have mercy on her soul.

Three months later, a grand highland wedding took place as the christening event of the newly renovated Glenshire Hall. The Foggs and Passpartout came as honored guests of the bride. Mary Katharine wore a stunning white dress with a McCallum plaid sash. The two island families were united under one roof with their first kiss as man and wife.

The reception lasted three days, but the couple was not seen after the first evening. Occasionally though, through the clouds a colored spot in the Scottish sky could be seen circling high in the vicinity for several days.
