Some time later, “Am I fully forgiven?”
“Fully, and please forgive me too,”
“Completely. I have a request.”
“What is that?”
“That we not do this again.”
“You mean never argue.”
“I mean never allow things to get so bad that this intense an argument has to occur. It is a point of pride for a man not to get cold cocked by his wife.”
“Will you be keeping secrets from me anymore?”
“Angel, I may not be allowed to work in Ireland ever again after this. If that happens, I may choose to leave the service and never be obligated to keep secrets from you. You understand the difference, don’t you? What is required of me for Queen and country is sometimes what I have to do rather than what I would like to do.”
“I understand now.”
“By the way, since when is receiving kisses on the face and neck a shameful thing?”
“When you pull me into the library on my way to bed for the doing, and keep me there for over an hour.”
“I can see how someone with a strict up bringing might come by that idea. You never objected, as I remember.”
“I did not object, but my family would have, had we been caught.”
“I see. Angel, would you object to speeding up the wedding, so your good reputation does not suffer any being in my company? There is no father or brother around now to keep me in line. That could become a problem for you.”
“Your cousin’s would not protect me?”
“They are MY cousins.”
“Oh . . . Well, I would have to think about that.”
“For how long?”
“Give me another minute . . . No, I wouldn’t.”
