Chapter 10

A Disturbing Discovery

Phileas passed the night at his club but used some time after his arrival there to play some card games as cover and next he excused himself to his fellows players and goes to a room reserved for his use under the club’s roof. He felt he had pushed Rebecca too far with his temper bursting and could hardly have risked Rebecca to find about his investigation and that sheet of paper under her hand would mean another argument stronger and certainly with more violence. Phileas sighed, rubbed his nose and sat with the table looking on what he had gotten from Chatsworth’s office. He had noted all the information about Rebecca’s assignments mentioned in the files handed to him by the service main head until her prolonged vacation and her coming back. He had also noted all about his father for the same period of time. There was a mission mentioned, something about an investigation on odd activities reported in the north of the France that had fallen in the same time that the dreadful mission were Erasmus had lost his life.

Phileas held his forehead and shook his head at the memory; there were better things to do than lose himself in that again. Phileas looked back on the information written on the paper, a lapse of almost eight months of time could be found in the entry by combination of Rebecca’ whereabouts and his father’ ones. Phileas growled and got up to pace in the room making sense of all of that. She had lived with him from his return from Prussia until her departure for vacation and had next come back after a long time. With his erratic behaviour of that moment, he had never noted in his diary any track of that. But if there were evidence enough, Phileas was reminded of the wire sent by his father while he was supposedly on Royal matters and that was not in the entry either. So if something had occurred in France that would not have even been found in Rebecca’s report.

No matter what it had been, sexual matters were rarely mentioned in the agents’ reports, at least that had been an important part in the success of the mission and then that was only a mere mention and details were avoided. If that had been a non consenting matter, well, Phileas preferred not to think about it, but he knew Rebecca well enough to know she would not have written that at all, would have handled that matter alone after the fact and would have hidden that the best way she could. When the secret could not be kept on anymore she would have looked for help outside. The puzzle’ pieces started to fall in place and Phileas sat back in his chair.

Rebecca had always worshipped Sir Boniface. Possibly she had not told him of her condition, no more that she had tell to her cousin as her pregnancy would have jeopardized their reputation, name and situation just as hers. That explained why the Queen had a little girl looking and sounding just as the little Rebecca with different eyes who was came to live with them at Shilingworth Magna. But all of that was extrapolation and Phileas would need facts.

Phileas looked on the decanter sitting on a tray with crystal tumblers; he grabbed one and served himself. So while one lost his life somewhere, on some other place one was to create a new live. On some other occasion Phileas would have been happy and would have toasted to that, but today even the brandy tasted sour sweet. Phileas grabbed the paper and burned that in the fireplace as the information was now engraved in his memory. He emptied his drink in one gulp and got back home to try at last to sleep in his own bed.

As he had feared the drinks got in the night had not been enough to keep the nightmares to fill his sleep again. The events being happened yet too lately in Castle Banquo and a mix of what happened years before in Prussia were not permitting him more that four hours of sleep in a row. He was only not to know that in the next room, his Rebecca was to have a problem similar with her sleep since he had pushed the matter to hardly on her while their argument with a trouble in add, she wasn’t able to understood the meaning of her nightmares and the headache coming with them were worsen from a day to the next one. So the next morning she proposed; in the purpose to lighten Phileas’ mood and hers; some vacation. He was stay in need of healing after the abuses done on him just as they were all in need to enjoy themselves far of the England and far of any trouble stay to haunt their mind. The trip to Tangier was agreed and the Aurora leaved, first for Paris where they take Jules with them and next to Tangier.

Too bad the trip supposed be one of leisure had so badly turned to a dreadful one. No one had planned to see one of them got in deep sickness and next be caught in the darkness league’ claws. At last, they had got Jules back in safety and had leaved him got the rest he was to need on the flight back as well that while a stay to Shilingworth Magna asked by Rebecca and un-denied by Phileas in lack of argument against that. The stay proved to be a good one not less with Jules there. But the young man had got a feeling that something was amiss between the cousins each time they were to stay few minutes alone now that the worry over his behalf was over with. But that morning of the second week they passed there, Jules sighs and shaken his head thinking that with those two that wasn’t uncommon as behaviour and that some question were better stay unasked. The matter would came out to the light soon enough. So avoiding the potential battlefield that the sitting room was to represent, Jules went to the Aurora where Passepartout had been said having retreated before the war was declared in the ancestral house.

The following week, they all leaved the Magna for London where Phileas said to have an important appointment. Rebecca didn’t complained as she mentioned the need to see Sir Jonathan to be sure he doesn’t forget about she being a trained field agent waiting for her next mission. So the Aurora landed to her usual spot in the British capital before the end of that day.

Work stay in progress....
